The glacier is a landmark of Kaprun.
Kitzsteinhorn is part of Hohe Tauern mountain range and reaches a height of 3,203 meters above sea level. Since 1965, a chairlift takes you to the top, and Kitzsteinhorn was the first glacier ski area in Austria. Today, there are two gondolas way up to a height of 3,029 meters. From the platform at a height of 3035 meters, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding Alps.
The best way to Kitzsteinhorn is from Kaprun to Kesselfall (there are regular ski buses). After seven kilometers you will see a large car park right beside the road (parking is free). There are two cable cars: Gletscherjet (younger) and Panoramabahn (older). At a height of 1,860 meters change to the next cable car, Gletscherjet 2 or Lengwidbahn, that leads up to the Alpincenter. The Alpincenter is a transfer station between Gipfelbahn and Gletscherjet cable cars. The last part of the way is provided by the cable car "Gipfelbahn" which leads from Alpincenter. An interesting feature is the highest supporting pillar in the world – it measures 113 meters. This lift takes you up to the panoramic restaurant Gipfel at an altitude of 3029 meters. From there you can walk on the top of Kitzsteinhorn at an altitude of 3203 meters. The road is lined with steel cables attached.
