Kaprun is a typical alpine village with strong tourism both in summer and winter. Kaprun has only about 3,000 permanent residents, but more than 700 thousand tourists pass through here every year.
The first mention of the village is from the 10th century. In the 12th century, it was built above the town castle, which is open to the public. The biggest boom for Kaprun came after 1965, when it opened a lift to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier (the first in Europe). A horrible tragedy happened there in 2000, when 115 people died in a fire.
Kaprun is the location of the biggest SPA center in the Alps, called "Tauern Spa". There are 11outdoor and indoor pools and 10 saunas. Another attraction is the Kaprun hydroelectric powerstation located at an altitude of 2000 meters.
From Kaprun you can go to the Maiskogel resort, located right at the edge of Kaprun, or Kitzsteinhorn glacier which is about 7km away. Right in Maiskogel you can find a bobsled which is open the whole year round.
There are several wifi free zones in the village.
The Tauren Spa
In Kaprun, there is a magnificent SPA complex with a total area of 48,000 square meters. Admission varies according to the time of day. We suggest trying an evening entrance, when the whole complex gives you a magnificent view of Kitzsteinhor glacier while lying in a hot whirlpool.
The spa has a large outdoor heated swimming pool illuminated by colored lights, again the bestexperience is at night.
Another pool is located in Zell am See.
