A large area, Zell am See – Kaprun is well known for its large choice of winter sports,but there are a lot of possibilities in summer as well.
The area is grouped around two towns:
- Zell am See – [weather forecast], [accommodation] – a marvelous town on the bank of amountain lake
- Kaprun – [weather forecast], [accommodation] – a small mountain town
The best known ski centers are:
- Schmittenhöhe – [webcamera], [piste map] – 77 kilometers of ski tracks just above Zell am See.The mountain peak is 2 000 meters above sea level.
- Kitzsteinhorn – [webcamera], [piste map] – 41 kilometers of ski tracks – the glacier is 3 000 meters above sea level up from Kaprun.
- Maiskogel – [webkamera], [piste map] – 20 kilometers of ski tracks – The mountain peak is “only” 1675 meters above sea level and is accessible from Kaprun. Part of the ski area is also a summer bobsled track.
All ski resorts have a common ski pass, at the same price.
Skiing in Zell am See- Kaprun
The Zell am See – Kaprun area is suitable not only for advanced skiers and snowboard enthusiasts, but also for beginners. There are 25km of blue, 27km of red and 25km of black pistes and 220km of tracks.
There are successive ski lifts. So if you want to go to the peak of a mountain, it is necessary to change lifts a few times. However it is all very well signed and there are a lot of refreshment stands.
Between Kitzsteinhorn and Schmitt are some sledge tracks. There is also a 1,5km long floodlit sledge track from Köhlergraben near to Schmittental. A bus will take you right to the start of the sledge track.
For public transport buy ESR-Skipas (Europa-Sport- Region). It is valid for all lifts in the areas Kitzsteinhorn / Maiskogel above Kaprunem, Schmittenhöhe above Zell am See and all ski buses between these centres. The season pass will give you a discount on entry to the swimming pool in Zell am See and Kaprun.
Skiing season begins in early autumn and lasts until the beginning of summer.
Other activities and attractions

Apart from skiing it is possible to play golf, try mountain biking, swimming, hiking andtry many types of relaxations and wellness. In Kaprun is one of the largest and the mostbeautiful spa complexes in Austria: Tauren SPA.
There are night fireworks shows on lake Zell in summer. Conversely, there is anight snow show in Kaprun in the winter.
Do you prefer gliding across the ice? Then you should try skating or hockey. Depending onthe current temperature, you can perform these winter sports on the frozen lake or at therink.
